Мрії Теда Тернера. Незакінчене дослідження В інтерв’ю, яке Тед Тернер дав “Audubon Magazin” (http://magazine.audubon.org/index.html) у 1996-му році, він сказав «Кількість населення світу в 250-300 мільйонів людей, тобто на 95% відсотків менша, ніж зараз, була б ідеальною» (“A total population of 250-300 million people, a 95% decline from present levels, would be ideal”). Нажаль, на сайті немає цього інтерв’ю, але я написав редакторові з проханням надати мені текст інтерв’ю або спростувати факт, що містер Тернер казав таке. Нижче наведений мій лист редакторові та відповідь — поки що єдина, яку я отримав. До editor@audubon.org

I see different Web sites quoting Mr Turner as having said that "A total population of 250-300 million people, a 95% decline from present levels, would be ideal", but no link to the original text of the interview. One other Web site quotes Mr Turner's words that he had never said such a nonsense. Could you please very shortly confirm or disprove the aforementioned quote, and if the interview had been really given to your magazine, would you be so kind to send me a transcript of it.

"In order to stabilize world population, we must eliminate 350,000 per day."
Виправте мене, якщо я помиляюся, але мені здається, що це можна перекласти таким чином:
«Щоби стабілізувати населення світу, ми мусимо знищувати 350 000 на день.»
Може, це якась «утка», і океанограф такого не казав? Або просто пожартував? Інакше, хто такі «ми»?
UPD. 1: Так, Андрюхо, її було вирвано з контексту.
"In the UNESCO Courier of November 1991, Jacques Cousteau wrote: "The damage people cause to the planet is a function of demographics — it is equal to the degree of development. One American burdens the earth much more than twenty Bangladeshes… This is a terrible thing to say. In order to stabilize world population, we must eliminate 350,000 people per day. It is a horrible thing to say, but it's just as bad not to say it."

UPD. 2: Знайшов число UNESCO Courier за листопад 1991, кому цікаво: http://www.accessmylibrary.com/coms2/browse_JJ_U022-199111. Там дійсно є це інтерв'ю. Ось справжня цитата в контексті:
"Some snakes, mosquitoes and other animal species pose threats or dangers for humankind. Can they be eliminated like the viruses that cause certain diseases?
— Getting rid of viruses is an admirable idea, but it raises enormous problems. In the first 1,400 years of the Christian era, population numbers were virtually stationary. Through epidemics, nature compensated for excess births by excess deaths.
I talked about this problem with the director of the Egyptian Academy of Sciences. He told me that scientists were appalled to think that by the year 2080 the population of Egypt might reach 250 million.
What should we do to eliminate suffering and disease? It's a wonderful idea but perhaps not altogether a beneficial one in the long run. If we try to implement it we may jeopardize the future of our species.
It's terrible to have to say this. World population must be stabilized and to do that we must eliminate 350,000 people per day. This is so horrible to contemplate that we shouldn't even say it. But the general situation in which we are involved is lamentable."
